Cheltenham v Gillingham Preview

For many people, a trip to Cheltenham has been all about how much money they can win on the horses, but for Gillingham this weekend it’s all about three points.

Andy Hessenthaler’s side head west this Saturday, not for a flutter on the nags, but to see if they can sneak back into the play-off places.

The much publicised suspension of four players leaves Hessenthaler short of options this weekend with Joe Martin, Charlie Lee, Lewis Montrose and Danny Spiller all missing.

However, Hessenthaler will be boosted by the return of Andy Frampton, Matt Fish and Jordan Obita who all came through Tuesday’s behind closed doors game with Wycombe Wanderers unscathed.

With that in mind, the squad and almost the side picks itself with Jack Evans seemingly likely to come into the right back berth in place of Charlie Lee.

One player that could make a return to the squad is striker Jo Kuffour, but he is rated as 50/50 for the game as he still recovers from the knee injury that has kept him sidelined for the past few weeks.

Therefore, The Gills could line up something like this:

Gazzaniga, Evans, Essam, King, Jackman, Whelpdale, J Payne, O Lee, Obita, Kedwell, Miller.

Subs: Hawkes, Fish, Frampton, Brown, Oli.

After last weekend’s late defeat against Crewe, The Gills will be keen to put that behind them and get back to winning ways against the fifth placed side.

With Oxford United hosting Rotherham United this weekend, should Gillingham win, they could well find themselves back in the top seven once again.

Cheltenham boss Mark Yates has a full squad to select from as he bids to get his team’s automatic promotion charge back on track.

The Robins have slipped to fifth in the npower League Two table due to a three-game winless streak, which has included two defeats, in what has proved to be a dismal month so far.

One player who is likely to be welcomed back into the fold is left-back Luke Garbutt.

Yates dropped Garbutt to the bench in the 1-0 defeat to Swindon on Saturday, electing to utilise the physical presence of Sido Jombati to combat the threat of League Two Player of the Year Matt Ritchie.

Garbutt’s inclusion would see Jombati switch to a more central berth, possibly at the expense of Steve Elliott.
